One woman dies needlessly every ninety seconds from cervical cancer somewhere in the world. In Africa, the hardest hit region, some 80,600 women are taken from their families by this insidious and invisible disease each year. We can change this.

Launch of Soroptimist tool 'let's chat: cervical cancer, what's that?'

Mary Muia announces launch of 'Let's Chat' tool.

Mary Muai, incoming President, Soroptimist International Africa Federation addresses Ministers and high-level officials at the UN Health4Life Fund side event during the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva in May 2024 to announce the launch of the digital health awareness tool 'Let's Chat: Cervical Cancer, What's That?

reaching women to eliminate cervical cancer

Educate

Women are often in the dark and unaware of the potential to be infected by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is not common knowledge that the infection shows no signs and takes decades to develop into a cancer. Women are not informed about the need for regular screening which is a simple and effective way to catch the virus before it causes damage. They also don’t know that a vaccine can protect their young girls from being infected in the first place.

enable

Cancer is still a taboo subject and cervical cancer is pretty much unfamiliar territory. It's a cancer but also an infectious disease transmitted through sexual intercourse. Just asking about it may make some women feel vulnerable, experience shame or be fearful of the reaction of their friends and family.

The 'Let's Chat' tool, co-created by SI Dubai and SI Nairobi Central, gives women a safe space to ask the questions they may not dare ask face-to-face.  The digital conversational tool is enabled by AI technology using natural language processing to understand voice-based or text-based human conversations. The tool can distinguish between similar questions and provide the correct answer. The answer never changes – it’s always a factual and accurate reply.

empower

The aim is to spread awareness about the need for screening and vaccination with the objective to increase knowledge, dispel myths and ultimately increase the uptake of preventative strategies to avoid cervical cancer.  It will also guide women to seek medical care if experiencing symptoms, leading to earlier detection and a better chance of successful treatment.

Ultimately, the 'Let's Chat' tool will contribute to saving lives and help countries reach the WHO elmination targets of 90% of girls vaccinated by age 15, 70% of women get high-quality cervical cancer screening and 90% of women preenting a lesion get access to treatment.

Cervical cancer elimination campaign africa

A first-ever partnership between Soroptimist International  Africa Federation and the United Nations Health4Life Fund was announced at the Soroptimist Africa annual conference in Durban, South Africa. Women and men from around the world were invited to joini  the Gala evening on 20 May 2023 from afar by buying  an invisible seat or table to honor the 77,000 women taken too early from their families by cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is preventable and  treatable.when detected in time. Sadly, this insidious cancer remains invisible for 15-20 years after infection by the HPV virus. Without access to regular screeing and effective treatment services, women in Africa fall victim to this invisible disease at an alarming rate. Today,  cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in Africa  and the numbers are rising.

The Soroptimist-UN Health4Life partnership will raise funds, raise awareness in local communities and advocate for improved access to vaccination, regular screening, and early treatment in line with the WHO Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy.  Funds raised will be pooled with other contributions via the UN Health4Life Fund to finance sustainable domestic responses to cervical cancer through grants for collective, collaborative, and coordinated action involving all relevant stakeholders, including Soroptimists.

Every day, 321 women in Africa hear the words 'You have cervical cancer'.

YOU can help us put an end to this. Reach out now to contribute.
